“Dance music needs riot grrrls. Dance music needs Patti Smith. Dance music needs salt in its wounds. Dance music needs women over the age of 40.” — and at a certain point it definitely needed The Black Madonna. Following decades of low-key life dedicated to master the craft of classic house and disco she was suddenly catapulted into the spotlight of club culture. Aside from managing a busy touring schedule, TBM became a loud advocate for disadvantaged people and it was her story that helped to recalibrate the male-dominated club culture back towards its core values. She returns to Ankali with ‘We Still Believe’ – a tour aiming to “raise money and awareness of the plight of those seeking asylum on the grounds of persecution for being LGBTQI”. Joining her for a night of endless dancing under a glistening mirrorball are two selectors – HAAi and Ankali resident Psj.
