Digging through March with Obštrukcia
Five weekends, fourteen events, two new in-house nights: we’re busy in March. Juraj Kačaba aka Obštrukcia dissected this month’s program to share with you his personal crème de la crème.
Let me start by saying that sadly (or happily idk) there’s no Greenday song for March. Although be it, probably because, and indeed, there are no actual green days in March either.
This “green-lessness” and March’s placement within the year itself have meaning though. It will inevitably make you see right through your naive New Year’s resolutions, ditch the overpriced yearly gym passes, and get onto the good ol’ dancefloor again.
So time to cut slack (including the app) and replace Formfactory for your fave soap factory. Let’s get your monthly weekend menu served.
1–3–2024 Glory Affairs x No Borders
The month does start real damn cute with the collaboration of two Ankali staples – Glory Affairs and No Borders.
I first came into contact with Glory Affairs back in the summer of 21 with their takeover of Planeta Za and takeover is indeed a true word here. Art installations, sculptures, screenings… even a DIY nail salon and tattoo parlor and a club filled to the brim with cool kids.
And by cool kids, I don’t mean the Echosmith’s “I wish that I could be like the cool kids, ‘Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in” type but the quirky, queer, and openhearted kids. So yes, you will fit in, even I did and made a bunch of really good friends that night. Lovely memories.
I just realized I haven’t said a bit about the lineup itself so let me do just that, but of course in the usual messy fashion again. ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U is the obvious selling point here and more of an ordain for me personally. The reason is, I was supposed to play alongside him last summer here in Prague but I also played at one of Amphibian’s own benders the night before and… well… I did not make it. Not my proudest claim but here we are.
¥ØU$UK€’s “on the web” sets also come with a little quirk too, instead of typical tracklists people tend to add timestamps to him taking parts of his clothes off. And I swear I will try not to miss it this time around.
While Vitamin as a project and a space hibernates, it’s great to have them around in town for a proper Friday dose of healthy chemicals. Be it for the continuation of the DIY raw energy that Herna once brought around – and I feel like Vitamin does at least to a degree pays its tributes to it – or for the group of lovely folks behind the project, Vitamin indeed sits close to my heart.
But don’t let that obscure the fact the lineup for the night is nothing short of great. The best of the best of local DJ ranks matched with *drumroll* Amsterdam’s own avid and upcoming talent Teqmun. I must say, his Dekmantel 2023 set probably sits within my last year’s most-streamed tracks on Soundcloud’s databases. So before you arrive make sure to check it out, there’s so much fun packed in the 1:26:02 of it.
See you at the bar! Me, Daniel, David, Toby, and hruškovice will surely be there.
15–3–2024 wubwub
This is a particularly sneaky one in the otherwise absolutely packed monthly roster, but looking at what’s on the table, this sounds like a gargantuan amount of fun to me. Dubstep, Grime, Jungle and all of the other bass-oriented genres went through a bit of a renaissance in the last year here in Prague and I’m all for it.
First, I’m finally not the guy annoying everyone at the afters with my cheeky 2009 Croydon warehouse recordings screaming “just wait for the drop bro”. Second, I feel like there are no better-equipped spaces to accommodate all the *bassy wobble* than Ankali’s dancefloor.
There’s EMA from Dublin’s own Woozy label coming over so another perfect time for a little homework. Go and check out EMA’s showcase show on RinseFM, it’s decked out from the bottom to the top with some truly greeeasy selectas.
… and do not forget your Carhartt fit and gun fingers at home, it’s time to shake your guts.
22–3–2024 Necta Snakky
Ain’t a better place for a bit of self-promotion right? No, but, really, the vending machine is stocked with some proper candies and ready for your coins. I’m gonna be there and you better be as well!
Oh, and Mama Snake will be there too. Instead of writing anything serious let me plug in a recording of a recording of her set from last year’s Dekmantel. It’s “stolen”, reuploaded, in 480p, and probably the best love letter to a DJ possible in our digital world of the year 2024.
To wrap things up, let me say, for a record, that the whole lineup for March is crazy good and the hardest part of writing this was actually picking only a few to showcase.
So thanks to the whole A crew for giving me the “virtual pen” and as always: Check the full programme of March here.
